The digital SAT hands every student a built-in Desmos calculator on every math question. Most prep books took that as permission to stop practicing arithmetic. That is a scoring mistake. Calculator keystrokes cost four to eight seconds each, and the Math section punishes students who leave sixty seconds on the table across forty-four questions. Twelve shortcuts recover that time without opening the calculator panel once.

What the Digital SAT Rewards on Timing

The Math section is two adaptive modules of twenty-two questions, each thirty-five minutes long. Average pace runs 1 minute 35 seconds per question, but the first ten questions of each module skew easy, so a strong opener buys four to five minutes for the hard back end. Bluebook, the College Board's testing app, embeds Desmos with a one-key toggle. Every toggle, tap, and read of the readout eats time that never comes back. Points sit at the finish line, not in the calculator.

Adaptive scoring compounds the pressure. Module one performance decides whether module two draws from the harder pool, which carries the higher point ceiling. Percentages, Ratios, and Growth

Roughly eleven of the forty-four SAT math questions touch a percent, ratio, or rate. The ten-percent shift handles the base case. To find seventeen percent of 240, take ten percent (24), add half for five percent (12), then add a fifth of ten percent for two percent (4.8), for a total of 40.8. The a% of b equals b% of a swap collapses ugly problems: 32% of 75 becomes 75% of 32, which lands on 24 in one step. Ratio questions collapse to fraction comparisons, and fraction comparison is one cross-multiplication. To pick between 7 over 12 and 9 over 16, compute 7 times 16 and 9 times 12: 112 vs 108, so 7/12 is larger. The move is faster than typing either fraction into Desmos and reading two decimals. Growth and interest questions bend to the Rule of 72: a savings account at eight percent doubles in nine years, so three doublings run about twenty-seven years. That estimate lands within two percent of the correct compound value and rules out three of four multiple-choice options in one line.

Squares, Fractions, and Estimation

The SAT recycles the perfect squares from one to twenty-five and the standard Pythagorean triples (3-4-5, 5-12-13, 8-15-17, 7-24-25) enough that memorizing them saves time on eight to ten questions per test. Difference of squares (a minus b)(a plus b) turns 21 times 19 into 400 minus 1, or 399, in one second, and 51 times 49 into 2500 minus 1, or 2499. Estimation cuts the biggest time sink on the SAT: computing a value the answer choices already rule out. If the four choices are 12, 24, 48, and 96, adjacent options differ by a factor of two, so a bracket accurate to fifty percent picks the winner. Round the ugly inputs, run the computation once at low precision, and pick the option in the correct neighborhood. The technique fails when the choices cluster tight (12, 12.5, 13, 13.5), which happens on about one question in eight; save the calculator for those and burn no keystrokes on the rest.

Elimination Before Computation

Multiple choice on the SAT is a filter, not a puzzle. Every question hides three wrong answers that fail a one-second sanity check: wrong sign, wrong parity, wrong order of magnitude, wrong last digit. Screen the four choices before you compute. On a quadratic-root question, the discriminant sign tells you whether real roots exist, so any real-number answer choice under a negative discriminant is dead on arrival. On a linear system, plug the smallest choice into one equation and read the sign of the residual before solving anything.

Backsolving is elimination's other half. When a word problem asks for the value that satisfies a condition, drop each answer choice into the setup and stop at the first hit. Bluebook orders numeric choices low to high, so start with choice B or C: if the residual is too small, jump up, if too large, jump down. Three of four questions collapse in two substitutions.
