Abacus Mental Math (Anzan): How Kids Multiply Three-Digit Numbers in Their Head

Japanese elementary students at the top anzan clubs multiply 415 by 738 in about a second and write the six-digit answer without any working shown. The method they use is not calculation in the way most adults picture it. Anzan is soroban abacus practice pushed past the physical bead frame, so the child moves imaginary beads on a mental soroban that lives behind the eyes. This post covers how anzan works, why it produces arithmetic speed a calculator can match on small problems, and what a beginner can honestly build without a Japanese club behind them.

What Anzan Is

Anzan is the mental-image stage of soroban training, taught in Japan and across East Asia since roughly the 1930s. A student first learns bead movements on a physical soroban, a wooden frame with vertical rods and beads that snap toward a horizontal beam to signal value. After a few years the sensei covers the frame and asks the student to picture it. The picture takes over. By the time a strong anzan student is competing, no bead has been touched in the current problem, but the mental frame updates in real time. Speed records at the All Japan Soroban Championship sit around 15 three-digit additions in under two seconds, which is faster than most adults can read the numbers aloud.

The Soroban Setup That Makes It Work

The soroban has one upper bead worth five and four lower beads worth one on every rod. Each rod is a decimal place. That five-plus-four structure covers the digits zero through nine with only a small number of physical bead moves, which is the whole point. In anzan practice the student holds this same layout in visual working memory. Numbers do not exist as base-ten symbols in that mental space, they exist as a bead configuration on a specific rod. Carrying and borrowing become single-bead flips on adjacent rods, not language-level rules. Once the layout is fluent the arithmetic runs faster than spoken counting, because the working step is spatial rather than verbal. Broad two-digit tactics like round-and-correct or cross multiplication still work, but anzan replaces them with a bead update on a rod.

How the Multiplication Method Runs

Three-digit multiplication uses a rod partition. The multiplicand sits on the left rods of the mental frame, the multiplier on the right rods, and a wide central band is reserved for partial products. The child works right to left on the multiplier, taking each digit of the multiplicand in turn, placing the two-digit partial into the correct offset column, and continuing. Because the bead updates are visual, the child never says the partial products out loud. That silence is what allows the pace. A trained ten-year-old completes 415 by 738 in roughly one to two seconds because six two-digit products plus a stacked add happen without verbal rehearsal. The same problem in a verbal method takes an adult 12 to 20 seconds, because inner speech runs at about 200 words per minute.

The Training Curve From Bead to Brain

Anzan requires about three years of soroban work before the mental frame becomes reliable. Public curricula in Japan and Korea typically follow a fixed set of gradings called kyu and dan, with kyu 10 at the entry and dan 10 at the peak. Physical soroban skill saturates around kyu 3, at which point the sensei introduces flash anzan, a rapid on-screen sequence of numbers the child must add without touching the frame. Progress from flash anzan to full mental multiplication is the last hard climb. Children who reach dan 1 usually add 15 three-digit numbers in five seconds, which is the informal benchmark for saying anzan has taken root. Adult learners who start soroban without prior training reach a working mental frame in roughly eight months at 30 minutes per day, and the ceiling sits lower than a child who started young.

  1. Kyu 10 to kyu 4: physical soroban only, single and two-column addition and subtraction.
  2. Kyu 3 to kyu 1: multiplication and division on the frame, flash anzan introduced with two-digit inputs.
  3. Dan 1 to dan 3: full mental frame, three-digit addition and multiplication, no physical soroban.
  4. Dan 4 and above: competition anzan, ten-plus three-digit adds in under two seconds, multi-digit division mentally.

What Transfers to Other Mental Math and What Does Not

The transfer story matters because parents ask about it and the cognition research is mixed. Anzan improves working memory span, place-value intuition, and speed on straight arithmetic. It does not carry meaningfully to fractions, algebra, geometry, or word problems, because the mental frame is a base-ten counter, not a symbol manipulator. That limit is honest. Japanese and Chinese anzan alumni still study standard math in school with paper and pencil. What anzan does give is a permanent asymmetry on any timed arithmetic task, which is why anzan alumni dominate mental calculation events. The Trachtenberg method and Vedic sutras cover more numeric territory but never reach anzan speed on pure column arithmetic.

Starting Anzan Practice Without a Sensei

Adults and self-teaching families can build a workable anzan foundation with a soroban and one of the free graded workbooks published by the League of Japan Abacus Associations. The first six weeks stay on the physical frame with three drills: single-column addition, two-column addition, and one-column multiplication tables against a stopwatch. Sessions run 20 to 30 minutes per day. In week seven the frame gets covered for the first drill only, then progressively for the others. The point of the daily puzzle at this stage is not anzan itself, it is keeping the arithmetic reflex loose while soroban builds the visual frame. A Mathness round played after a soroban session tends to produce cleaner two-digit answers because the ten-chunking is already primed. Progress is visible in the first three months even without a teacher, and the ceiling only matters if the goal is a competition rank on the leaderboard of a formal soroban club.

Anzan gives one gift and one only: unbeatable pure-column arithmetic speed. Everything else about mental math still needs the standard toolset.
